By Rex
A. Ewing In Part One, you will be entertained by Dog of the Sun and Cat of the Wind — a primer charmingly disguised as a fable. In Part Two, you'll be enlightened by a wealth of practical, hands-on information for solar, wind and micro-hydro power; plus common sense explanations of the necessary components such as batteries, inverters, charge controllers, and more, needed to create your own electricity and live comfortably, either on- or off-the-grid. In addition to solar, wind, and hydro power, Ewing covers the basics of passive solar design, solar hot water, and water pumping. It has been almost 10 years since we've seen a new book on solar, and the hardware has changed dramatically. Rex is right up to date, explaining all the latest offerings like utility intertie systems and maximum power point tracking charge controls. Wrapping up this easy-to-read handbook on sustainable living is an extensive appendix with worksheets, tables and maps. 255 pages. Softcover. |

4-Nozzle Hydro Turbine $2,045.00 2-Nozzle Hydro Turbine $2,495.00
We lived with one of these for several years at Earthaven Ecovillage and had little trouble with it. Versatile hydro turbine for higher flow, lower head hydro sites or sites with head up to 400ft. The highly adjustable Stream Engine uses a turgo-type runner wheel that can produce useful power from lower heads. The permanent-magnet generator has no brushes to wear out, and uses a clever adjustable air gap to compensate for differing flow rates. Setup does require some time with this universal design, and involves trial and adjustment, selecting one of four alternator wiring setups, and then adjusting the permanent-magnet rotor air gap until peak output is achieved. A precision shunt and digital multi-meter are supplied to expedite this setup process. Output voltage is user-settable from 12 to 48 volts. Available in two- or four-nozzle turbines, the Stream Engine is supplied with universal cut-to-size nozzles of 1/8" to 1". Head can be from 5 feet to 400 feet, and flows of 5 gpm to 300 gpm can be used. Maximum output is approximately 800 watts. |
In these pages you’ll find the latest nuts-and-bolts information on how to harvest renewable energy sources to power your home; how to sell that renewable energy back to your utility company; how to site and build your dream eco-home; how to minimize your fossil fuel use; and more. In fact, our fully updated, Solar Living Sourcebook, edited by Real Goods President and Founder John Schaeffer, is the ultimate resource on renewable energy, sustainable living, alternative construction, green building, homesteading, off-the-grid living and alternative transportation. This 30th Anniversary Edition showcases a NEW chapter on Relocalization, including localizing energy, food, goods and services — a movement whose strategic response to the problems of peak oil and climate change may provide the primary solution to our present dilemma. The Sourcebook also features NEW chapters on Permaculture, Biodynamics and Natural Burial. As aging boomers consider what’s buried along with our loved ones (vast amounts of embalming fluid, metals and hardwoods) we respectfully offer this chapter as an alternative and the “ultimate back-to-the-land movement.” Plus, you’ll find fully rewritten chapters on Land and Shelter and Solar Water Heating; updated sections on Sustainable Transportation and Solar Utility Intertie; and our comprehensive Sustainable Living Library with several hundred more books than ever before. This incomparable resource also includes more than 50 pages of maps, wiring diagrams, formulae, charts, solar sizing worksheets and much more. Whether you’re a layperson or a professional, the Sourcebook puts the latest research and newest products at your fingertips to make sustainable living a reality. The Sourcebook is also a superior classroom text. 600+ pages, softcover. Printed August 2007. |

$339 - $1,149.00 depending on size and volume. Bosch, a leading manufacturer of heat exchangers for more than 60 years, sells more than 1.5 million tankles water heaters each year. These are our most popular units, providing hot water for average sized homes with natural gas and propane water heaters. They are capable of delivering a constant supply of hot water at the temperature you select and have excellent energy efficiency ratings that range from 80% on the 1000 and 1600 models to 87% on the 2400 models. Our smallest 1000P is appropriate for handwashing applications, the 1600 series is great for one major hot water application at a time (such as a shower or a load of laundry), and the 2400 units are the best for larger families requiring two major hot water applications at a time. The Bosch Model 1600 units can support a single shower or multiple smaller fixtures simultaneously. The first of its kind, the 1600H incorporates a revoluntionary hydro-generated ignition system, allowing the heater to operate without a standing pilot, electricity or a battery -- using energy from the flowing water to ignite the spark. No electric plug necessaryThe 1600P has the same flow/output specifications but uses a standard pilot light. The 1600PS is the "solar" version of the 1600P, and it accepts solar or woodstove preheated water. Ask our techs about power vented models. . The Bosch Model 2400E is for families that need to operate two major hot water applications at a time, and your family will thank you for years to come for the endless supply of hot water. This heater has an average life expectancy of more than 20 years, offers you energy savings of up to 50%, is easy to install and has multiple venting options. Also available in outdoor-rated unit 2400EO (no vent necessary on outdoor units).
